On Tuesday, Joker Folie à Deux received seven nominations for the infamous Razzie Awards, which are widely recognized as the satirical counterpart to the Oscars, honoring the worst cinematic productions of the year.
The musical, which struggled commercially when released last fall, is competing in categories such as "Worst Picture" and "Worst Sequel." This comes despite the massive success of the original Joker film, which won an Academy Award for Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Batman's arch-nemesis. Ironically, Phoenix himself is nominated for a Razzie in the "Worst Actor" category for his performance in the sequel.
His co-star, singer and actress Lady Gaga, was also not spared from criticism, earning a nomination for "Worst Actress."
Although the film grossed $200 million at the box office—about a fifth of what the original Joker made—this sum is still significantly higher than the film's production costs.
The Razzie Awards, officially known as the "Golden Raspberries," date back to 1981 when they were created in a Los Angeles living room by a group of film students and industry professionals. The awards are typically announced a day before the Oscars ceremony.
In a similar vein, director Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis received six nominations, the same number as Madame Web, the biographical Reagan, and the video game adaptation Borderlands.
Meanwhile, Jerry Seinfeld's surreal film Unfrosted, centered around Pop-Tarts, earned four nominations.
The winners of this year's Razzies will be revealed soon, with movie fans eagerly awaiting the results.
