The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a No. 10 typhoon warning signal—the highest level alert—due to the impact of Typhoon Wefa. The warning was announced at 9:20 AM local time (01:20 GMT) on Sunday.
This means that wind speeds exceeding 118 km/h are expected. Typhoon Wefa is set to come even closer to Hong Kong within the next two hours, and the No. 10 warning is expected to remain in effect for some time.
Due to the severe weather conditions, many public services and activities in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have been suspended, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.
A large number of flights have been canceled or rescheduled, and the Home Affairs Department has opened temporary shelters for those in need.
Authorities have also urged residents to stay away from coastal areas during the storm.
The last time a No. 10 warning was issued was during Super Typhoon Saola in September 2023.
